St John of God - Mother and Baby Unit

This is the second article written after a visit to the Mother and Baby Unit, St John of God. In the first article, we listed the symptoms of PND and discussed how to find appropriate and qualified help.  Now we are wanting to help those friends and family of a mum who isn't coping by giving advice on how to raise what can be a delicate conversation.

"We Need to Talk"

It's wrong, I know.

But the reality is this: There is still a stigma attached to having a mental health problem.

And, I think it is further complicated when your mental health issue arises after becoming a mother.

After all,  isn't being a mother "the most natural thing in the world?"

It is a very brave new Mum who puts her hand up independently and says "I have a problem".

Most of the time, it is those around the mother who see the warning signs first. But it is a daunting and frightening prospect to start such a delicate conversation.

If you suspect someone of having PND but you don't know what to do or say, in this video, Prof Marie-Paule Austin, St John of God Hospital's Chair of Perinatal and Women's Mental Health, and Consultant Psychiatrist to Royal Hospital for Women,  will talk you through the process.

It may be an awkward, difficult conversation to start, but don't feel like you only have one chance to get it right.  Prof Marie-Paule Austin recommends you keep the communication channels open, even if you feel like you aren't getting anywhere with the conversation.

We hope you have found these articles helpful. Post Natal Depression/Post Partum depression is a condition that affects many women, and when it has been treated effectively can make the difference between enduring motherhood ( and life in general) and appreciating and enjoying (almost!) every moment.
