Working Girls > How to Build A Mother of a Business…
By Denise Hall
September 24, 2010

Because I am one, I know that mothers are often also the primary or sole breadwinner in the family, and both are really BIG jobs! So I want to share how I became the entrepreneurial mother™ and built a Mother of a Business, while not compromising on the important things.

My intention was (and is still) clear, to combine role-model mothering and earn enough (plus plenty more) to support our Lifestyle for now (and in my old age!).  All in guilt-free school hours, and on my own terms.

Fortunately, as my daughter has grown so has the business I started, to the point where it is now a 7-figure business. Whilst I figured out the “how” as I went along, I am now using minimum time to earn maximum money. There’s no point without travel, fun and comfort in spades, right!

What I know for sure is that building a Mother of a Business gives you Lifestyle; to be the Mother you long to be.

Sure, there was some good fortune, but there was also focus. I learned, amongst other things, to become open to opportunities and alternative ways of living and working. Admittedly, I was determined to do it my way, with “do” being the operative word.

Optimism and self-belief are a good start, but you need some tactics in place to give it some bones and you need to take action to flesh it out. After all, it’s not about finding oneself; it’s about creating oneself! So here’s a couple of “Mothers Helpers” that I have made my own…

Start by working out your version of freedom & dream lifestyle, and go for it! We entrepreneurial mothers see problems as possibilities, and seek opportunities. That said; I do prefer decisions to be informed and based on evidence, so I try to set realistic goals that I action. The feedback from doing stuff in turn provides the information and proof, one way or another.

Surround yourself with an awesome team and good friends. I found it invaluable to have great mentors who help me gain and develop the skills and knowledge to make my dreams come true. Because education comes in many forms, read, listen and ask questions where and when you can.

Still, sometimes you just have to be bold. Listen to that gut feeling, feel the fear and do it anyway. Be prepared to take calculated risks but that are ”calculated”, okay?

Last, but certainly not least, establish a routine for managing your energy. I don’t believe in juggling. Prioritise instead. Try to make sure you have good quality food, family time, play time, enough sleep and regular exercise.

I leave you with the 11P’s of Building a Mother of a Business:
the entrepreneurial mother™ is Passionate with Purpose, a true Problem Solver, has Perseverance and Persistence, is Predictable – NOT but also People Focused; has Pluckiness, sees the Panoramic Picture, has a Prioritised Plan, will PassOUT (outsourcing and delegating) and Plays FULL out (she gives it all she’s got). Does that sound like YOU?
Making changes can be scary, so you may even fake it until you make it!
Bottomline is, if your business or job is eating up your time, and you're way too busy to earn and mother more! (think about it)...
it’s time to STOP; re-examine, re-evaluate and re-energise.
What do you want? Why are you doing what you do?
